Our Advent is going to be full at Holy Cross. We will explore Faith Intersections together.
During Advent (the four weeks leading up to Christmas) in 2018, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, in Salem, Oregon, invites you to observe the Intersections of Faith with them. Culture, Tradition, Faith, and Food are all part of the celebrations that lead up to Christmas Eve, and the coming of the Christ child to save the world. Love, service and community are themes that resonate throughout Christian holiday events. We worship Sundays at 9:30am in the sanctuary at Holy Cross, 1998 Lansing Ave NE., Salem, OR 97301.
We invite you to four distinct worship services, with four opportunities to draw near to Intersections of Faith as we commemorate the four weeks of Advent!
December 2th 9:30 am We begin Advent with a visit from the Festival Carolers led by Solveig Holmquist, to set a tone of Joy and Excellence in worship. Our worship continues with prayer and Holy Communion.
December 9th 9:30 am The Second Week of Advent commemorates Our Lady of Guadalupe, and draws from the Latino culture as we sing the joyful La Guadalupana, and learn more about how a vision of the Mother of God influenced the native community and gave them an awareness of the personal relationship that God offers us all. This week will feature a special children’s skit about Our Lady of Guadalupe.
December 13th at 6 pm. -Thursday at 6pm we will meet at a roundtable, to share the stories of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Saint Lucia, seeing how they intersect, connect, and inform our Advent journey. All are welcome. We will include food from both traditions.
Sunday December 16th at 9:30 am -The Third Week of Advent commemorates Saint Lucia, and draws from the Swedish and Scandinavian traditions surrounding her story. We will sing Santa Lucia and enjoy a special children’s skit about Saint Lucia as well as a Saint Lucia Crown!
The Fourth Week of Advent will feature a Christmas Cantata, “Did You Know?” from our Holy Cross Vocal Choir and Bell Choir, journeying through the scripture story of the birth of the Messiah in music and song. We are touched by the Gospel words as we hear them sung by these hard-working musical friends.
